Important Social Security Changes Coming: What Seniors Need to Do NOW

Big changes are coming to Social Security that could affect seniors and others currently receiving disability benefits. Below are steps you can take now to protect your benefits and make things easier down the line.

1. Create a “My Social Security” Online Account

Why? Social Security is moving more services online. Setting up your account now can help you avoid future delays.

2. Check and Update Your Information

Why? Keeping your information up to date helps prevent delays or interruptions in your benefits.

How? Log into your online account, call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 or visit a local office.

3. Complete Identity Checks Early

Why? Social Security may require you to verify your identity in person or through a secure online system, which can take time.

How? Log into your account or visit your nearest Social Security office  if prompted to complete ID verification.

4. Set Up Direct Deposit

Why? Direct deposit ensures you get your benefits on time, even if local offices close or reduce hours.

How? Set up direct deposit through your online account by calling Social Security or by visiting a local office.

5. Choose a Trusted Person to Help Manage Benefits (If Needed)

Why? If you’re concerned about managing your benefits or accessing services, you can appoint someone trustworthy to assist.

How? Call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 or visit their website to set up a RepresentativePayee.

6. Gather and Keep Important Documents Safe

Why? For future applications or verification, you’ll need documents like your Social Security card, birth certificate, Medicare card, and photo ID.

How? Store these documents securely, make copies and let a trusted family member or caregiver know where to find them.

7. Stay Updated on Social Security Changes

Why? Being informed helps you prepare and avoid unnecessary disruptions.

How? Regularly check ssa.gov and your local news.

8. Keep Important Social Security Contacts Handy

Why? Having direct numbers on hand can save you time if wait times are long.

How? Ask for direct numbers and write them down during your next call or visit.

Taking these steps now may help make things smoother later so you can continue receiving the benefits you rely on.

Need more help? If connecting to the Social Security Administration is challenging, call an AACOG Benefits Counselor from Alamo Service Connection at 210-477-3275 or outside Bexar County 1-866-231-4922.
